Busy mornings call for a simple routine. But which products play well under makeup? Here’s how to keep your skin protected and your makeup smooth.

Makeup goes on best when skin is hydrated and protected. To avoid a patchy finish, keep it simple: hydrate first, protect second, makeup last.

Step 1: Cleanse (gently)

In the morning, you only need to wash off what’s left from the night before. If you have dry skin, you can skip cleansing--just a water rinse will do. A mild milky cleanser also works, especially if you used retinol the night before.

For dry skin:

A low pH cleanser is also a great morning option, since it cleans without stripping your skin:

Step 2: Hydrate

After cleansing, add hydration straight away. This is the step that helps keep makeup from looking dry by midday.

Step 3: Brighten

Vitamin C is a great morning step. It’s an antioxidant that brightens skin and works alongside your sunscreen.

Step 4: Moisturize

A moisturizer seals everything in. Choose a lighter gel cream, or a richer cream if your skin is dry. If you have oily skin, you can skip this and go straight to sunscreen.

Step 5: Protect

Sunscreen is the most important step of your routine, and it’s also what your makeup sits on. Choose one that feels light and doesn’t leave a white cast, so makeup glides over it.

Step 6: Let it set

Give everything a few minutes to settle. Do your hair, go through your morning, have a sip of your coffee. This pause helps keep products from pilling when you start your makeup.

Step 7: Keep makeup light

Once your skin has set, keep makeup light so your skin still looks like skin.

A mist can revive your skin during the day:

Building Your Routine

Makeup looks its best on skin that’s hydrated and protected. A simple morning routine looks like this: a gentle cleanse (or just water if your skin is dry), a hydrating toner, a vitamin C step, a light moisturizer, and sunscreen. Then give it a few minutes to set before you start your makeup.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are answers to commonly asked questions about prepping your skin for makeup:

What should you put on your skin before makeup?

Start with a gentle cleanse, then layer a hydrating toner, vitamin C, a light moisturizer, and sunscreen. Hydrated, protected skin helps makeup look smooth instead of patchy.

How long should you wait after sunscreen before applying makeup?

Wait a few minutes, until the sunscreen feels dry to the touch. This helps prevent pilling and keeps your makeup from sliding around.

Why does my makeup pill over skincare?

Pilling usually comes from using too much product, layering too quickly, or stacking textures that don’t mix well. Use thin layers and give each step a moment to absorb.
