“Skin glazing” is a skincare phenomena that’s been front and center of the "K-beauty" movement for several years now. If you’re in any corner of the skincare community, you’ve surely heard of the term, or one of its derivatives: Glass skin. Chok Chok. Gwang skin. No matter what name you know it by, this routine technique is universally agreed to produce the glowiest, dewiest results in your skin, no matter your skin type. We break down any questions you might have about it here, with a little bit of history!
What is Skin Glazing?
Skin glazing is the multi-step skincare routine that helps the skin achieve a “glass skin” appearance that’s so popular in the Korean skincare world.
How long has this Skin Glazing been around?
The multi-step skincare routine has been around a long time in Korea without specific terminology. But the term “glass skin” went viral online in the U.S. around 2017.
What does a Skin Glazing routine look like?
Skin glazing begins with a double cleanse(first to remove makeup, sunscreen, dirt & debris, and second to cleanse the skin of any leftover residue). Next,a toner to hydrate and prep the skin for the following treatment and moisturizer steps. A treatment product can include a serum, ampoule, essence or even an oil to hyper-target specific skin needs such as acne, pigmentation, dehydration, fine lines, etc. The routine ends with a moisturizer to lock in hydration and nutrients for the skin to absorb, leaving the skin hydrated, refreshed, and dewy (achieving the “glass skin” appearance).
Can anyone benefit from the Skin Glazing routine?
This routine focuses on hydrating the skin and achieving an optimal oil to water ratio, so that the skin appears refreshed and balanced. Of course, your skin type will determine what kind of products you use to achieve this balance, but the steps in this routine are great for all skin types, and anyone can benefit from this routine.
When should I do this routine?
Every day! Your skin is constantly fighting environmental stressors as well as dealing with internal and lifestyle factors, so starting and ending the day with a good, balancing routine will help your skin feel comfortable and glowing all day and all year. We recommend tailoring your routine to changes in weather, diet, schedule, stress, or hormones, etc., but consistency and patience are key for a long-lasting glow.
What is K-Beauty? Is there an origin date for K-Beauty?
Koreans have a longstanding and immense passion for taking care of their skin. More on this HERE. In ancient Korean culture, it was believed that outward beauty reflected the inner self; that true beauty came from having radiant skin. Since 700 B.C., Koreans have been researching, developing and documenting skincare methods. These methods were designed to get at the root of problems, not just to hide or mask imperfections. They believed, and still believe, it is never enough for skin to appear flawless.
What made K-beauty so popular outside of Korea?
Korean beauty combines centuries-old knowledge with new, state-of-the-art technologies, so it’s time-trusted and innovative. K-beauty in general, focuses on long term skin health — strengthening the skin’s barrier on a cellular level, protecting from UV damages, and adding hydration. The results speak for themselves. Skin that is happy and healthy truly does glow! And who wouldn’t want that?
