That is where Korean sunscreen has quietly led the way, especially for those with oily skin. Thanks to a recent FDA decision, the gap between Korean and American sunscreen is finally starting to close.
Why This Took So Long
The reason American sunscreens have lagged is regulatory, not scientific. The US regulates sunscreen as an over-the-counter drug, so every new UV filter has to clear the FDA's rigorous approval process. Korea and the EU treat it as a cosmetic, which lets new filters reach the market much faster.
The result is a smaller, older toolbox. The US allows roughly 16 types of UV filters, while the EU allows around 30, and until now no new chemical filter had been approved here since 1999.[1] The elegant, lightweight textures found in a Korean sunscreen are known to work for oily skin and were never brand magic. They came from filters that simply were not allowed here.
Meet Bemotrizinol
In June 2026, the FDA approved bemotrizinol (also known as Tinosorb S), the first brand-new sunscreen filter cleared in the US in about 25 years. It is broad-spectrum, covering both UVA and UVB, highly photostable so it does not break down quickly in the sun, and known for an elegant finish with minimal white cast. It has been used safely in Korea and Europe for over 20 years. The order takes effect August 9, 2026.
One honest note: it will take time before Korean brands roll out sunscreens formulated with this newly approved filter for the US market. Reformulating, testing, and clearing production all take a while, and one supplier holds exclusive rights to the ingredient at first. So, do not expect a wave of them overnight. Even so, this is the first real sign in decades that the gap is closing.
